The well known Slovak pilgrimage town of Sastin has a number of important historical buildings and amongst them, the synagogue, built in 1852 was one of the jewels of Slovak Jewish cultural heritage, reflecting the very well established Jewish community of the town.
Following the Holocaust - a tragedy in which most of the Jewish community of Sastin (and Slovakia) perished, the Sastin synagogue became a grain store and eventually fell into a complete disrepair and was heading for demolition in 2019.
In the eleventh hour we established the Civic Association Synagoga Sastin- Straze Gallery Shul and successfully initiated a protective action - the demolition was stopped and with an unprecedented speed the local and regional government issued a protective order over the building
The final aim is to restore the building and turn it into a cultural and community centre open to all. We are looking to engage a much wider group in our restoration effort.
